Caribs New Toyota Rugby Champs

Caribs Rugby Club defeated Stag Trinidad Northern 32-16 on Saturday at the President?s Ground, St. Ann's to become the new Toyota Trinidad and Tobago Rugby Football Union (TTRFU) Championship division champions. Stag Trinidad Northern held the title for the last four years.

Caribs with their emphatic victory also retained the coveted Bruno Browne Cup.

In the clash of T&T Rugby's iconic arch rivals it was Stag Trinidad Northern who drew first blood with a Mikey Browner drop goal that gave the defending league champions a three point lead. Caribs however were on song and struck back with two unconverted tries by Jason Clark and Ronald Silverthorne. Browner's second three pointer kept his team four
points adrift, as Caribs went to the half time interval with a 10-6 advantage.

Five minutes after the resumption, Caribs quickly extended that lead to 17-6 with Clark's second try which was converted by veteran fly half Brendan O'Farrell.

But with their title slipping away Northern rallied with an unconverted Ryan Fredericks try to cut the Caribs lead to 17-11.

Hopes of the Stag Trinidad Northern supporters were dashed when a decisive ten minute passage of play with tries by Peter Bacchus and Ryan Brown, a Don Rojas drop goal and another O'Farrell conversion built an insurmountable 32-11 Caribs lead.

A late consolation try by the never say die, Trinidad Northern and National
captain, Adam Frederick would not have made up for his Club's joint
disappointment of losing the TTRFU Championship division title and Caribs
retaining the coveted Bruno Browne Cup.

In the earlier game Stag Trinidad Northern senior division team retained the Raffie Hosein trophy defeating their Caribs counterpart 10-6.
With the TTRFU 15s league competition now ended the focus shifts to 7s rugby.
